Servicing for vans and light commercial vehicles

Why servicing your LCV matters

Drivers of LCVs arguably rely on their vehicles more than most motorists, whether making deliveries, carrying tools, ferrying staff or fetching supplies. Having vehicles off the road for repairs can cost time and money, which is why it is highly recommended to have your van or LCV serviced at least at the manufacturer recommended intervals, if not more often. This is particularly true of vans with wet belts which we have covered in an earlier blog.

Most modern diesel vans are fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs). While intended to reduce emissions by trapping soot, a DPF can suffer unforeseen problems due to the frequent short trips for which many vans are typically used. DPFs require high temperatures to trigger regeneration, a process by which the accumulated soot is incinerated during a prolonged drive at higher speeds.  If a van or LCV is primarily used for short journeys, the DPF can become clogged and the engine loses power, with a costly clean or repair job the only solution. Regular maintenance and vigilance for the signs of DPF issues (such as a loss of power, warning lights) can help avoid problems before they become serious and expensive.

At Dowleys, we want to help our customers avoid costly work and make sure their vehicles are safe, reliable and efficient to drive, with affordable but expert servicing for all makes of vans and LCVs.

Which vehicles are considered LCVs?

In the context of this article, and specifically in the UK, when we use the term LCV, we are referring to vehicles used for light haulage. These vehicles may be up to 3.5 tonnes, require no tachograph and need only a regular car licence to drive. Vans, pickups and even three-wheelers may come under this category.

Many major manufacturers produce LCVs for the UK market but among the best selling vans in the UK are perennial market leaders from Ford (the Transit and Transit Custom, plus the Ranger pickup), Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Vauxhall Vivaro. The Volkswagen Transporter and Renault Trafic are popular selections in the mid-size market, while variants from the Stellantis group (such as the Peugeot Partner, Citroen Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo) are common choices at the smaller end of the sector.

Fleet servicing for vans and light commercial vehicles

While it can be a real inconvenience for an owner-operator to have a van or LCV off the road due to breakdown, it can become a real headache for fleet operators who need to coordinate the logistics involved in operating multiple vehicles.
