Dowleys now offer Class 5 MOTs
We can now do Class 5 MOTs at Dowleys. In technical terms, this means we can provide MOT testing for a variety of vehicles in this class, which formally covers private passenger vehicles and ambulances in the 13-16 and 16+ passenger seats category, playbuses and coaches. There is also a Class 5a for vehicles requiring additional seatbelt inspection and a lightweight Class 5L for vehicles under 5000kg.
Which vehicles need a Class 5 MOT?
In real terms this we can help you with MOTs for your minbus or coach; for schools, care homes, community transport groups and more. It might be for your sports club or even your pub, to transport customers home. We will help ensure you can do all of this with a safe and certified vehicle, thoroughly checked during our Class 5 MOT test.
What's in a Class 5 MOT?
A Class 5 MOT is not dissimilar in many regards to other MOT tests as it checks the vehicle is of sound structure, can operate safely and its emissions are within permitted standards. In addition to this, as the category covers passenger vehicles, extra checks are made relating to the safe transportation of multiple passengers.
Our examiners will inspect the following during a Class 5 MOT:
- Braking and suspension systems are tested to ensure your vehicle can stop safely and remain stable—even when carrying a full load.
- Steering and controls are assessed for accuracy and responsiveness, giving you confidence at all speeds.
- Bodywork and structure are inspected for any signs of damage, corrosion, or weakness that could affect safety.
- Doors and exits are checked to confirm they open and close correctly, allowing quick and safe evacuation if needed.
- Seatbelts and seating are examined to ensure every seat and restraint system is secure and functioning as it should.
- Lighting and signalling equipment are tested to make sure all lights, indicators, and emergency lighting are clearly visible and working properly.
- Emissions and exhaust systems are measured to confirm they meet DVSA environmental standards.
Why is a Class 5 MOT required?
A Class 5 MOT is both a legal obligation and an essential safety ccheck. The latter is magnified as the vehicles in this category are likely to be carrying significant numbers of passengers and therefore safety must be paramount for any operator. Further, operators will want to know the vehicle is roadworthy and reliable and can carry out its tasks with reduced fear of breakdown. Driving without an MOT can be penalised with a fine of up to £1000 so ensuring that your vehicle has its MOT certificate makes both financial and legal sense, as well as reassurance for operators and passengers alike.
