What is the MOT test?

The GB MOT was established in 1960. M.O.T. stands for Ministry Of Transport. The MOT scheme is a road safety measure designed to ensure that all cars, motorcycles and light goods vehicles more than 3 years old are properly maintained.

A European-wide version of the MOT based upon the then Member States’ minimum requirements was introduced in 1996 (1996/96/EC). But Brussels hasn’t stood still and as part of their objective to halve road death and injury rates by 2020 they have produced their latest proposals for new legislation changes to testing

Did you know your MOT test can be carried out up to one month prior to the expiry date of an existing UK MOT certificate provided that a current MOT certificate is presented to the examiner at the time of the test, effectively providing you with a 13 month MOT. On passing the MOT test, the vehicle will receive a certificate valid from the date of expiry of your existing MOT certificate.

MOT test while you wait

At Dowleys, we can provide you with an MOT while you wait, usually the MOT test will take between 45 minutes and 1 hour and we have a comfortable waiting area with refreshments and Wi-Fi, where you can watch our mechanics working on your vehicle via the television (we were the first MOT station in Oxfordshire to provide this facility to our customers!).

Free MOT re-test

The majority of MOTs carried out at Dowleys MOT & Service Centre pass the MOT test first time, however, on occasion it is necessary to carry out some remedial works in order to get the MOT passed. If this happens and your car does fail the MOT, we will advise you of the repairs required and provide you with a quotation, it is then your choice as to whether you instruct us to proceed with the repairs or you carry them out yourself or you take the vehicle elsewhere. If your car does fail the MOT, we offer a free MOT RE-TEST, if it is carried out within 7 days of the original test. This re-test is free even if you have not had the repairs carried out at Dowleys.

In the unfortunate event that your vehicle fails and you need to leave it with us for a longer period then we will provide you with a courtesy car, free of charge.
