RAY Mears is the most admired man of bushcraft, frequently found in the wilds, foraging from the hedgerows and giving life to fire with sticks. But right now, our very own survival expert is in a flap about his Land Rover Defender.
Mears, 52, has heard about a series of robberies of these vehicles near his home in Sussex: “I was warned by the local police that Defenders are getting stolen in my area,” he fumes. “I would be heartbroken if mine was taken"
Figures from the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service demonstrated the Defender has become the a much more stolen car in the UK since production of the classic 4×4 ceased in January. Mears, who is a Land Rover ambassador (but insists he’d drive one regardless), believes the Defender is the best, most robust off-roader ever built. “It’s the end of an era,” he sighs.
