Rainy day in Oxfordshire
August 27, 2017 at 3:06 PM
After the wash out summer of 2017, you're probably starting to run out of things to do when the weather is bad. You've repainted the hallway, read all the books you got for Christmas, you've seen every film that's come out in August, and the children have used up all the craft materials in the house.
But a rainy day in Oxfordshire doesn't mean you have to stay at home! There are plenty of other activities you can do that are still under cover.
If you have children, many museums nowadays help cater to them as they like to get people interested in history from an early age. Check their website before you go as you will probably find some activities for kids taking place throughout the day. Even if you don't have children, a nice stroll around a museum can be a good way to kill a few hours, especially if you follow it up with tea and cake in the café afterwards. One of the best things about museums – many of them are free! Great for a budget day out.
Visit a brewery
More suitable if you don't have children, or if you've managed to offload them on the grandparents for the weekend. Oxfordshire is home to several independent breweries and wineries and many offer tours around their facilities. You may not want to stroll among the grape vines, but a tour through the vats, learning about how to brew different kinds of ale (and a few samples along the way) will give you a new appreciation of your favourite tipple. Plus you can get some great ideas for Christmas presents in the gift shop.
When was the last time you went ice skating? It's not just for open rinks at Christmas! Google your nearest indoor rink and off you go! If you're concerned about the whole day being a washout then you're in luck – a lot of indoor rinks are close to bowling complexes, you can ice skate in the morning, have a lunch out and then spend the afternoon bowling. Take the kids or invite some friends.
Have a spa day
How often do you promise yourself that next time you're feeling a bit low – you'll treat yourself to a trip to the spa? Instead of finding excuses to not go, use a rainy day as an excuse to finally do it! A nice massage, some time in the jacuzzi, and finish it off with a steam in the sauna. Obviously if you have children then none of this is possible, go for the second best thing then go to the local swimming pool, at least it's still all water!
If you need to wear out the children then indoor play is a bit of a godsend. Banbury, Oxford and Abingdon all have soft play centres. For older children you can try Lazer Kombat or Exciting Game, which will exercise their brains and their limbs.
Hopefully this has given you some ideas for your next rainy day in Oxfordshire. If none of these inspire you – buy a Netflix subscription and have a TV series binge!
